I started skating in 1968 as a figure skater. I competed in singles and then later in ice dancing where I learned to master skills such as turns, edges, power, and quick footwork.
I trained and competed for 16 years straight before retiring from the competitive arena of figure skating. Out of love for the sport of skating, I continued to train and practice for peace of mind and to maintain a certain level of physical stamina and discipline.
In 1992 I took up in-line speed skating where I raced throughout the United States. My journeys took me to two Nationals and three X-games. Speed skating taught me the disciplines of training different energy systems and it taught me how to maximize the efficiency and power of my strides.
In Sept of 2000, at the request of a friend, I started playing Women's Ice Hockey. Having done individual sports all my life, it was great to be the teammate that everyone counted on. I had never once played a game of ice hockey and now here I was being thrown into power plays, penalty kills, and I was generally counted on as one of the more skilled skaters on the ice.
Skating isn't everything, which I soon learned, but it sure is a huge integral part of the game. Having the ability to not only keep up with my opponents, but also to out-skate them gives me the competitive edge that few players truly possess. Being a strong skater gives me confidence knowing that to out-maneuver me would be a challenging task.
And most importantly, having strength in my skating allows me to create time and space when needed as well as take away my opponents time and space.
As a coach, I can now utilize all of my past training experiences as well as sport specific knowledge and turn it into a challenging training experience for you, your child, or your team.
